4 a.m. Tête-à-Tête

Two Green Frogs and a Great Horned Owl
are conversing this morning
in the marsh behind my house.

A steady discourse —
back and forth, back and forth —
like they’ve been friends for years.

One has to wonder what it is
they are talking about
…or maybe not.

Much better to find the quiet,
tune out the machine hummmmm
and the highway rummmmble

Listen for the hoo-h’HOO-hoo-hoo
the GUNK!-Gunk!-gunk!
and GUNK!-Gunk!-gunk!

Hoo-h’HOO-hoo-hoo
GUNK!-Gunk!-gunk!
GUNK!-Gunk!-gunk!

Hoo-h’HOO-hoo-hoo
GUNK!-Gunk!-gunk!
GUNK!-Gunk!-gunk!

Listen as long as you can
Before the clamor of birdsong
reminds you of all you’ve forgot.
