Building Wings

One of my favorite blogs is a Tumbler blog by poet Shinji Moon called The Cinnamon Peeler’s Wife. With the same beauty and rich sensuality as its namesake poem by Michael Ondaatje, Shinji’s thoughts and writings speak to the very depths of my soul.

In recent months, her blog has inspired me to write poetry, to reconsider relationships, to pursue dreams.

Several weeks ago, as I was meditating on a new Vision Board and its intentions, the following quote appeared on Shinji’s blog:

“If we listened to our intellect,
we’d never have a love affair.
We’d never have a friendship.
We’d never go into business
because we’d be too cynical.
Well, that’s nonsense.
You’ve got to jump off cliffs
all the time and build
your wings on the way down.”

— Annie Dillard

Since then, whenever I am out and wandering, I have been finding feathers. Feathers here and feathers there, taken home to collect as offering to the Vision Board—perhaps I am indeed building wings!

  1. Oh, thank you, Jen! I relate so welll to building wings on the way down. What a poignant image it is. The sychronicity of navigating to your blog today gives me pause…I too have just been writing about feathers!
